The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has reversed, in part, the U.S. International Trade Commission's (ITC) invalidation of Finnegan client US Synthetic Corp’s polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) patent. The court ruled that the patented invention was a specific composition of matter rather than an abstract idea, thus reinstating the patent's eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101. However, the Federal Circuit upheld the ITC’s finding that the patent was sufficiently detailed to enable skilled artisans to reproduce the invention without undue experimentation, affirming its enablement under 35 U.S.C. § 112.
