Service Innovation: AI + KM
While it’s timely for many firms, Finnegan has been ahead of the curve in our approach to artificial intelligence (AI) and generative (GAI) technologies. Decades of protecting innovations related to machine learning and AI have endowed us with a clear-eyed view. We see AI and GAI as strategic enablers, tools that enhance and augment the quality, efficiency, and value of our legal services while preserving the professional judgment, confidentiality, and ethical standards that define our practice.
"As an IP-focused firm, Finnegan has always embraced and deployed technology for business efficiencies and client service delivery."
-James R. Barney, Managing Partner
Finnegan’s Approach:
Assessment | Development | Management
Our internal AI Tech Tools Committee, comprising partners, technicians, and risk professionals, is diligent in finding opportunities where AI can augment work product, reduce repetitive work, minimize errors, and streamline quality control and second-attorney review processes. From intelligent drafting assistants to workflow automation and predictive analytics, we have explored and are using some truly fascinating tools that are reshaping how we work.
Meeting Firm Standards and Practical Use Cases
Finnegan is investing in AI and GAI technologies for key operational areas where AI has the potential to boost productivity. The AI Committee assesses various tasks within the firm's practices, aiming to optimize efficiency and performance through AI integration. Our current AI/GAI tool bench consists of both proprietary and industry-standard tools that allow our attorneys to focus on strategic analysis and client engagement, while reducing time spent on repetitive or administrative tasks. Our long-term vision is to embed AI into the fabric of legal service delivery, creating smarter workflows and delivering greater value to clients.
Advancing AI Maturity
Our Knowledge Management & Innovation Team is front-line for developing and managing Finnegan’s AI capabilities. The director of litigation technology and knowledge management serves on the AI committee and works with committee leaders, including the firm's patent office practice leader, to supervise the development or testing/piloting of tools, manage their implementation, and track usage metrics.
We recognize that the value of AI is amplified by the skill of its users. That is why we are equipping our attorneys and professionals with AI training, including prompt engineering training, enabling them to craft precise, high-impact prompts and fully leverage AI agents. This training enhances the accuracy and relevance of AI outputs, accelerates decision-making, and ensures that our professionals remain in control of legal strategy and quality.
Prioritizing Responsible Governance and Data Security
Foundational to our approach is Finnegan’s commitment to safeguarding client data; securing our environment is the utmost priority. We hold an ISO 27001: 2022 certification, which became available in 2025 and includes more security controls. Our full IT and security suite / infrastructure is in scope. To maintain its standing, Finnegan must undergo annual audits to assess its maintenance of these high standards. ISO 27001: 2022 certification provides Finnegan clients with third-party validation that the firm’s data security guidelines, policies, and procedures meet international standards for the highest globally accepted standards for information security.
