The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in favor of Finnegan client Google, affirming the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s (PTAB) rulings that struck down three Uniloc patents covering conference call technology. Google petitioned for inter partes review (IPR) of the patents and the PTAB found all disputed claims in each patent to be invalid for being obvious in light of prior art. Uniloc requested rehearing of the decision, but the PTAB refused. On appeal to the Federal Circuit, Uniloc asked to stay its appeals until the Supreme Court of the United States reviewed the Federal Circuit's Arthrex ruling. The Arthrex decision came down in June 2021 and the Federal Circuit lifted the stay in July. However, the Federal Circuit ultimately upheld the PTAB’s decision.
