Three Finnegan Attorneys Recognized by World IP Review as Diversity Advocates

October 2022

World Intellectual Property Review

In its 2022 diversity issue, World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR) recognized Beth Ferrill, Anand Sharma, and Sonja Sahlsten as key voices advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the IP space.

Beth was recognized as one of WIPR's Influential Women in IP for her efforts serving as co-lead of Finnegan FORWARD (Focused on Raising Women’s Advancement, Representation, and Development), the firm’s women’s business initiative. She works with firm management to lead efforts regarding the inclusion of women at all levels, external promotion of current and future women leaders, and client and firm co-aligned efforts.

Anand was recognized as a Diversity Champion. WIPR's Diversity Champions are individuals who have worked tirelessly to create a brighter future for all aspiring IP practitioners. Anand, who previously served as the firm's managing partner and is currently the firm's chair, was the first person of color to serve in both roles. Under Anand’s leadership, Finnegan partnered with Howard University to teach patent law and partnered with Microsoft in its work with the Hispanic National Bar Association. Anand was an integral part of establishing the Finnegan IP University, a five-week virtual program that introduces diverse undergraduate and graduate students to career opportunities in IP. Prior to serving in these roles, Anand was the first chair of the firm's Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

WIPR named Sonja a Trailblazer - an outstanding woman with less than 10 years of experience in IP who has already made a significant impact on the sector. Sonja serves on the steering committee and women practitioners sub-committee of the Washington, DC chapter of the Women in IP Network. She is involved in Finnegan FORWARD and was named a Finnegan mentor of the year. Sonja has also participated in Finnegan’s IP patch program, which introduces Girl Scouts to STEM.
