A Case Called Alice: Software Patents and the U.S. Supreme Court

Alice Corporation vs. CLS Bank was one of several IP cases from the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court term that will have a significant impact on future patent cases. The case revolved around Alice Corporation’s patents for computer-based financial systems—patents that CLS Bank deemed invalid. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of CLS Bank, citing that the patents were invalid because they were abstract, and therefore cannot be patented.
