Intuit Inc. and it’s TurboTax software won an exemption from a ban on tax-strategy patents. The ban is part of a larger patent bill that the Senate passed on Wednesday. David Hill, partner at Finnegan, told Bloomberg that patent protection is an important aspect of Intuit’s company and companies like it should be able to seek patents for inventions, regardless if they involve tax strategies. “We shouldn’t be stopping the improvement of software or other kinds of inventions that make it easier or better for people to prepare their taxes, to file their taxes or even to take advantage of legitimate things in the tax law that they can rely upon,” said Hill.
