For the second year, Finnegan is hosting its IP University program, which targets diverse undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Speaking with Law360, Finnegan partner and Chief Diversity and Inclusion officer, Esther Lim, explained the importance of the program.
"It really underscores that there is a great need for spreading the word about the possibility of a patent career, and that a STEM degree can be used not only to go into industry," Esther said.
According to Esther, in an effort to get the word out about the program, the firm engaged in "intentional outreach" through attorney networks and by working with a consultant to make sure word of the program was passed to students from underrepresented groups. She added that she used her position as an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Law to partner with its professors and ensure there was outreach to historically Black colleges and universities.
"One of the main challenges in the IP profession, in terms of increasing diversity and representation, is the pipeline issue," Esther explained, adding that students often find out about the possibility of going into IP after they've already finished undergrad without a STEM degree. She cautioned that "[I]t's important to do the outreach to increase awareness about the option to use your STEM background in the practice of law as early as possible."
The free program begins on Wednesday, March 1. Students can register through February 20.
