Jin Ooi represents clients in high-stakes intellectual property (IP) disputes and strategic counselling matters, with a particular focus on patent disputes. His practice spans a broad range of technologies, including pharmaceuticals and life sciences, telecommunications, and consumer products. His work encompasses patent litigation, standard essential patent (SEP) and Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) disputes, trade secrets, complex damages inquiries, and regulatory matters, often involving parallel proceedings in multiple jurisdictions. Jin has acted in cases before the Patents Court, Court of Appeal, and UK Supreme Court. Legal directories such as Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000 describe Jin as “an exceptionally smart patent expert” who “stands out particularly for his great judgment and insight”.
Jin is particularly recognised for his patent litigation work in the life sciences sector. His experience includes working with pharmaceuticals, biotechnologies, medical devices, and other advanced technologies, including small molecules, biologics and biosimilars, DNA sequencing, vaccines, transgenic animal platforms for antibody discovery, cochlear implants, and transcatheter heart valves. Drawing on his background in both law and pharmacology, Jin advises clients on the scientific, legal, regulatory, and commercial issues that arise throughout the lifecycle of innovative products. His work has included representing major pharmaceutical companies in landmark disputes over blockbuster drugs, as well as securing interim injunctions, defending patent validity against coordinated generic challenges, and defending against complex damages inquiry claims, most notably a widely recognized follow-on damages case arising from cross-undertakings in pharmaceutical patent proceedings.
Alongside his life sciences practice, Jin has substantial experience in technology-focused patent disputes. He has been involved in several of the leading UK SEP and FRAND matters, including cases concerning interim licence declarations and global licensing disputes. He has also litigated significant long-running disputes concerning non-combustible reduced-risk consumer products. His broad technical practice has led JUVE Patent to describe him as an “all-rounder” who “stands out for the technical diversity of his cases, from pharmaceuticals to mobile communications to e-cigarettes—as well as his hard work and tenacity.”
Many of Jin's matters involve strategically important cross-border disputes requiring coordination across multiple jurisdictions. He regularly works alongside teams across Europe and other key markets to develop globally aligned litigation strategies. IAM notes he “skillfully coordinates complex, multi-jurisdictional patent disputes” and “confidently manages litigation strategies across different countries, ensuring alignment between legal teams, and adapting approaches to address jurisdiction-specific challenges”.
Beyond patent litigation, Jin has experience in trade secrets disputes in the medical devices, aerospace, aviation, and heavy industry sectors. He also often works at the intersection of IP and commercial litigation issues, including contractual and regulatory disputes. Jin brings experience in life sciences regulatory advice matters and related transactional work, including support for mergers and acquisitions in regulated industries.
Jin is recognised by Chambers UK, The Legal 500 UK, IAM Patent 1000, JUVE Patent, Managing Intellectual Property (MIP), and other leading legal directories. Described as a “powerhouse” with “exceptional legal acumen” and “a nose for a good point”, clients praise his “excellent advocacy”, “unwavering responsiveness”, “incredibly sophisticated attention to detail”, as well as his ability to develop effective litigation strategies in technically complex disputes. One client recently observed that “what truly differentiates Jin from others in the market is his ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, actionable guidance – often under significant time pressure.”
