October 18, 2023

Managing Intellectual Property

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 18, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC—Finnegan partners Jeffrey Jacobstein, Dr. Moritz Meckel, Cara Regan, and Morgan Smith were recognized as Rising Stars by Managing Intellectual Property (MIP). MIP's Rising Stars list recognizes up-and-coming intellectual property practitioners in private practice who have contributed to the success of their firms and clients.

Jeffrey is the leader of Finnegan’s patent office practice. He focuses on strategic client counseling, due diligence, and post-grant proceedings, primarily in the biotechnology and life sciences industries. His experience includes prosecuting and appealing applications within the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well as larger portfolio management, diligence, licensing, and opinion work. Jeffrey represents clients during inter partes review (IPR) and appeal proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and in reexaminations at the USPTO. He also plans for and acquires patent term extensions for approved biologic and pharmaceutical products in the United States and around the world.

Moritz focuses on patent litigation and appeals in Germany. He holds a Ph.D. in physics and is one of few lawyers in Germany admitted as an attorney at law, a German patent attorney, and a European patent attorney. Moritz is admitted with all German district courts, higher regional courts, the Federal Patent Court, the Federal Court of Justice (in patent nullity matters) as well as the German Patent and Trademark Office, the European Patent Office, and the Unified Patent Court. He represents clients in contentious matters relating to a wide range of technologies such as optics, materials science, medical devices, automotive, and mechanics.

Cara focuses on patent and trade secret litigation at every stage, from the strategic decision to file a proceeding through appeal. Her experience includes district court proceedings and International Trade Commission (ITC) actions; post-grant challenges at the PTAB; and appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where she clerked. Cara’s technical expertise encompasses a wide range of technologies, including medical devices, software, mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and consumer products.

Morgan’s practice focuses on trademark and false advertising litigation. She litigates cases and manages enforcement efforts for some of the world’s most renowned brands, representing clients in a diverse range of industries, including sports equipment, apparel, fitness, food and beverage, travel, consumer electronics, personal healthcare, video games, pet products and services, automotive, and telecommunications. Morgan’s comprehensive practice includes handling federal district court cases and cancellation and opposition proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Strategic enforcement counseling and portfolio management are important parts of Morgan’s practice, where she counsels clients with large international portfolios on selection, maintenance, and enforcement of trademark rights in the United States and abroad.
