Dr. Moritz Meckel is a patent litigator in Finnegan's Munich office. He holds a Ph.D. in physics and is one of only a handful of lawyers in Germany admitted as an attorney at law, a German patent attorney, and a European patent attorney. He represents clients in contentious matters relating to a wide range of technologies such as materials science, electronics, optics, medical devices, automotive, and mechanics.
Moritz has both broad and deep experience covering all stages of the lifecycle and enforcement of patents in Germany as well as with the European Patent Office (EPO). He concentrates on patent and utility model disputes, handling infringement, nullity, cancellation and opposition proceedings on a daily basis. This ranges from product analysis to enforcement of final infringement rulings, and from prior art considerations to nullity appeal hearings with the Federal Court of Justice or the EPO's Boards of Appeal. He represents patentees as well as opponents/alleged infringers. Moritz is admitted with all German district courts, higher regional courts, the Federal Patent Court, the Federal Court of Justice (in patent nullity matters) as well as the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA), the EPO, and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Managing Intellectual Property has recognized Moritz as a Rising Star for 2021 and 2022.
Before becoming an attorney, Moritz earned a doctorate in physics, working at the forefront of experimental research at the intersection between ultrafast quantum optics, molecular spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. He solved hands-on issues relating to electronics, lasers, optics, vacuum technology as well as programming and large-scale data analysis, and he co-authored 25 scientific papers, many of which were featured in peer-reviewed journals on atomic and molecular physics. Moritz leverages his combined legal experience and technological expertise in representing clients across various industries in contentious matters.
