Landslide
Landslide interviewed Mareesa Frederick to discuss her career in intellectual property as well as diversity in IP law. Mareesa’s interest in math and chemical engineering led her to explore a career in STEM and intellectual property. She attended Spelman College, a women’s historically Black college, and went on to pursue her law degree at George Washington Law School. In the interview, she notes that since starting her career, she has noticed an increase in women of color in IP; however, the challenge has been in retaining women on color. Mareesa emphasized the importance of mentoring and providing diverse attorneys access to the same opportunities as their peers, and she encouraged diverse attorneys to network and build relationships. Mareesa also raised the importance of exposing diverse children to careers in STEM to help foster an interest in the sciences.
