According to a recent World Intellectual Property Organization report, the number of generative artificial intelligence patent families more than doubled from 18,862 in 2024 to 37,808 in 2025, reflecting growing global activity in the field following the emergence of large language models.
"The GenAI patent landscape is crowded and moving faster than ever," Finnegan partner and co-head of the AI practice Karthik Kumar told Law360. "For companies in this space, strategic IP decisions made right now regarding where to file and what to protect will dictate market competitiveness for years to come."
