Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR)

About

Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) is part of our work in Consumer Goods and Services, Electronics and Information Technology, and Hospitality, Gaming, and Leisure.

Immersed in protecting AR/VR innovation

Augmented reality and virtual reality are shaping up as future technological battlegrounds, with numerous high-tech companies making significant investment in these technologies across a range of industries, including aerospace and defense, automotive, consumer electronics, digital health, Internet of Things (IoT), retail, software, and video gaming. Innovation in the AR/VR space takes many forms, including branding, digital media, software, hardware, designs, and other intellectual assets. Navigating the IP landscape in this rapidly evolving marketplace is a complex endeavor. In close partnership with clients, we tailor comprehensive, sophisticated IP strategies to protect their investments and build their market share. Finnegan is deeply committed to supporting AR/VR innovation and working with companies pushing boundaries and creating new spaces.

Finnegan understands the potentially disruptive nature of AR/VR technology, the need of companies to determine how this technology may affect them, the demands of investors and shareholders to generate value, and the importance of securing early and meaningful IP protection. We work with AR/VR innovators to develop sophisticated, comprehensive, and tailored IP strategies to meet their individual needs. We help with:

  • Strategically developing a worldwide portfolio of copyrights, design and utility patents, trademarks, and trade secrets
  • Counseling on freedom-to-operate in specific markets without running afoul of others’ intellectual property
  • Providing due diligence, advice, and industry, market, and competitive research related to mergers, acquisitions, investment targets, barriers to entry, and technology niches
  • Counseling on business-related matters, including antitrust and competition issues
  • Monetizing IP portfolios to generate additional revenue streams
  • Litigating IP claims to protect clients’ innovations and defend them from infringement claims
  • Challenging and defending patents in administrative proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including reexamination, inter partes review (IPR), and post grant review (PGR) proceedings
