Patent Agent
Caitlin Coverstone focuses her practice on patent litigation and prosecution, bringing deep technical expertise across telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, biomedical devices, and aerospace technologies. She has experience drafting, prosecuting, and defending patents, and has assisted in patent disputes before U.S. district courts and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In addition, Caitlin has played a key role in supporting the firm’s appellate briefing team on matters before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC).
Caitlin's practice encompasses all stages of patent disputes, including the preparation of inter partes reviews (IPRs) and ex parte reexaminations (EPRs), strategic patent portfolio counseling, competitor analysis, and freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments. In addition, Caitlin has experience in trade secret litigation, including claims involving misappropriation and enforcement under the Defend Trade Secrets Act.
Prior to joining Finnegan, Caitlin conducted advanced research in both academic and national defense laboratories. At the University of Notre Dame, her graduate research focused on developing and testing advanced imaging technologies for disease diagnosis, risk assessment, and treatment response. As a research assistant at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, she developed a sensor feedback network and control algorithm to optimize impedance matching for a continuously varying antenna system. Caitlin’s background includes roles at both Fortune 500 companies and emerging startups, giving her valuable insight into the evolution of technology and innovation. At Texas Instruments, she worked on power management devices for advanced aerospace and defense applications. At a high-tech startup, she performed research and development on a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone accessory, as well as Micro-LED displays and chips. Caitlin’s experience working directly with multi-disciplinary teams of engineers allows her to appreciate the critical role of intellectual property (IP) protection in innovation.
Beyond her technical expertise and legal acumen, Caitlin is a championship golfer with an impressive record of achievements. She is a multiple-time Texas State Champion (high school level) and Conference Champion (collegiate level). At Rose-Hulman, Caitlin served as team captain for the Fightin’ Engineers, held the #1 ranking on the team, and secured numerous individual and team titles, all while shattering school records that stand today. Despite her demanding golf schedule, Caitlin excelled academically, earning the prestigious title of Academic All-American scholar athlete.
