In a notable win for Finnegan client Volkswagen Group of America Inc., a Houston-based federal judge ordered patent lawyer William Ramey and his client, VDPP LLC, to pay $207,000 in legal fees following the dismissal of a "frivolous" lawsuit claiming Volkswagen's 2020 backup camera system infringed a VDPP patent.
U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal criticized the case as one that "never should have been filed," noting that VDPP’s misconduct had "infected the entire litigation." The court found Ramey jointly liable for the fees, marking the latest in a series of sanctions against him or his clients for litigation misconduct.
