FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 11, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC—Law360 selected Finnegan partner James R. Barney as one of five 2017 Intellectual Property MVPs of the Year. The MVPs are an elite list of attorneys who have secured victories in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters, and record-breaking deals. James successfully argued one of the most important patent appeals of the year, Aqua Products, Inc. v. Matal.

“We are extremely proud of James and his accomplishments,” said Finnegan managing partner Mark D. Sweet. “He is truly deserving of this award.”

James has served as lead counsel in numerous matters in a variety of industries, including automotive, medical, chemical, consumer electronics, financial, and amusement. He has also been involved in more than a dozen inter partes review (IPR) petitions before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His practice focuses on patent litigation and appeals; he led the firm’s appellate section for four years. James received a B.S. in Chemistry (1990), with honors, from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a J.D. (1999) from Yale Law School. The same year he graduated, James embarked on a one-year clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals at the Federal Circuit.
