LMG Life Sciences

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 5, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC—On September 4, LMG Life Sciences hosted its 13th annual awards ceremony, the LMG Life Sciences Americas Awards, in New York City, where the region’s most distinguished firms, practitioners, and in-house teams were honored for their exceptional work in the Life Sciences industry. A testament to the experience, skill, and knowledge of the firm’s attorneys and IP professionals, Finnegan won three firm awards, including IP Boutique Firm of the Year, Patent Strategy Firm of the Year, and Hatch-Waxman Litigation Firm of the Year – Branded. With more than 100 ongoing ANDA litigations each year, Finnegan is proud to be crowned the Hatch-Waxman Litigation Firm of the Year and recognized as an industry leader for representing innovative pharmaceutical companies against patent challenges. Among the 2025 individual honorees were Finnegan partners John D. Livingstone and M. David Weingarten, Ph.D., who were named General Patent Litigator of the Year (South) and Patent Strategy Attorney of the Year (South), respectively.

Former Atlanta office managing partner and back-to-back General Patent Litigator of the Year (South) winner, John D. Livingstone is a nationally recognized first-chair trial lawyer who focuses on complex pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology patent litigation before U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. John led the litigation teams responsible for the firm’s appellate victory in Kaken Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.; Bausch Health Care v. Andrei Iancu and district court win in AstraZeneca AB v. Aurobindo Ltd et al., both of which were selected as Impact Cases of the Year at previous LMG Life Sciences Awards. He also serves as lead counsel in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and routinely lectures about patent law, including as an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Law, teaching a course on patent litigation.

A two-time LMG Life Sciences Patent Strategy Attorney of the Year (South) and former post-doctoral research fellow, Finnegan partner M. David Weingarten, Ph.D., has a diverse chemistry and life sciences practice. Prior to practicing law, David spent more than a decade in the pharmaceutical industry developing drugs across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, and inflammation. As a member of senior management, he was responsible for leading research and development efforts in drug discovery, process research and development, and manufacturing. He also prepared New Drug Application (NDA) submissions, conducted due diligence, and managed technology transfers. Today, David’s practice focuses on complex chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology patent litigation before U.S. district courts and the ITC and on post-grant proceedings before the PTAB.

Finnegan’s Life Sciences practice boasts over 250 attorneys and IP professionals with advanced degrees in relevant scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacology, biomedical engineering, or electrical engineering, many of which joined Finnegan after holding positions in the industry, at universities, or as examiners with the USPTO.
