The 2023 New England Legal Awards were held on September 21 at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. Finnegan partner Cory Bell took home the “New Leader in the Law” award, which recognizes attorneys under 40 who have excelled in the courtroom, in client service and cultivation, service to bar associations and/or pro bono work or community service.
Cory focuses on post-grant practice, patent prosecution management, client counseling, and litigation for clients in the technology industry. As a junior attorney, he quickly became a leader in PTAB practice. He worked on the first CBM, co-authored one of the first books on the topic for the ABA (now on its third edition), and while only a third-year associate, convinced Suffolk Law to let him create one of the first law school courses on PTAB practice.
Cory has worked on 200+ post-grant proceedings, making him one of the most experienced attorneys in the field. Recognizing his skills, clients asked Cory to work on related litigations and not just the co-pending IPRs. Cory now regularly serves as litigation counsel, particularly in cases involving complex computer/media technologies and before the District of Massachusetts.
The New England Legal Award submissions are reviewed by senior leaders across the ALM newsroom, who have the most relevant substantive expertise and knowledge of the geographic region. Judges discuss and conduct external research, interviews, and consult with an external panel of experts when applicable.
