United Technologies Corp. has sued rival Rolls- Royce PLC in federal court and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) for allegedly incorporating patented UTC technology in turbofan engines used in the Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 airliners. UTC, whose Pratt & Whitney division sells competing engines, filed complaints Friday against Rolls-Royce in the ITC and the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut. UTC claims that Rolls-Royce' Trent 900 and Trent 1000 engines infringe a reissue patent that covers a novel design for turbine blades. UTC is represented by Finnegan.
