Finnegan, Henderson Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP is one of several Washington, DC-based law firms participating in The Clemency Project 2014, a first-of-its-kind pro bono program to secure mass commutations for federal prisoners. For the initiative, the Justice Department sought help from the private sector to find inmates who meet eligibility criteria for a sentence commutation or a pardon. Lawyers participating in the project expect to review nearly 20,000 clemency surveys, primarily from prisoners who are serving sentences for federal drug offenses. No president or U.S. Department of Justice pardon attorney has ever assessed this number of commutation requests at once, making this a unique and significant opportunity.
