WASHINGTON, DC — Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the world’s largest intellectual property law firms, has launched in London with the relocation of two partners and a third set to join in January.
The office, Finnegan Europe LLP, which officially opened this week, is headed by London managing partner Anthony C. Tridico, Ph.D. who will be joined by partner Martin D. Hyden and additional lawyers practicing both UK and U.S. law.
The firm, which has more than 350 lawyers globally, is looking to recruit approximately 20 patent attorneys and lawyers to the office in the future and will announce its third London partner shortly.
The London focus will be on strengthening its European patent practice. The Brussels office will close in the early part of next year once the logistics of transferring to London have been finalized.
The firm, ranked as a market leader for intellectual property work in the United States, has a number of major clients active in Europe including Schlumberger, ConocoPhilips, BTG, Pronova BioPharma Norge AS, Grünenthal GmbH, Swiss Post, and Tetra Pak.
“We are thrilled to announce the opening of our London office. We are focused on the expansion of our European patent practice and having a strong presence in London is a definitive sign of our commitment to the market,” stated London office managing partner, Anthony Tridico. “We have already hired new European patent attorneys who will be joining us in the coming weeks and months, and look forward to continued growth. The combination of a U.S. and European patent practice offers greater opportunity and options for our clients.”
“We are excited about the opportunity that the London market presents,” states Finnegan managing partner, James B. Monroe. “And we look forward to the continued growth of the European practice.”
Dr. Tridico has more than 15 years of experience in the field of intellectual property law and his practice involves diverse technical areas from biotechnology, chemical, and pharmaceutical sciences to medical devices, diagnostic tools, and instrumentation. A significant portion of his current practice is devoted to post-grant proceedings, appeals and oral hearings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Patent Trial and Appeal Board, as well as European Patent Office (EPO) opposition and appeal procedures. Working in Europe for much of his career, Anthony has gained significant knowledge of the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the diversity of laws and practice among the European national systems. His knowledge of the European legal system and how it differs from the United States allows him to effectively counsel clients with global interests in intellectual property.
Mr. Hyden, meanwhile, is a qualified UK and European patent attorney with over 25 years of experience in intellectual property law positions in private practice and corporations. Prior to joining Finnegan in 2010, he was head of UK patents practice for Rouse & Co. Previously, he served as patent counsel and IP department manager for Schlumberger at various locations in the UK, United States, Japan, and France between 1990 and 2003. His practice covers all areas of patent counseling and prosecution with substantial experience in EPO opposition and appeal procedures.
In addition to London, Finnegan has international offices in Shanghai, Tokyo, and Taipei. The firm, which is headquartered in Washington, DC, has five U.S. offices.
