Ryan McDonnell focuses on patent litigation in a wide array of technologies in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields. He has participated in Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) and biotechnology cases at the district court and appellate court levels, and in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
Ryan’s litigation experience spans all phases of pre-litigation, litigation, and appeals, including developing infringement and invalidity theories, claim construction, fact and expert discovery, motions practice, brief drafting (before both district and appellate courts), examining witnesses and arguing motions at trial, and arguing before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was named on the Best Lawyers “Ones to Watch” list in 2025. Ryan served as a law clerk to the Honorable Richard G. Taranto at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit from 2019 to 2020.
At Purdue University, Ryan conducted research on the use of microwave resonance sensors to measure operating parameters of various pharmaceutical powders. He operated a roller compactor to make ribbons from pharmaceutical powders and used a microwave resonance sensor to create calibration models to measure their moisture, density, and composition.
Ryan incorporates pro bono work into his practice through representing clients before the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Federal Circuit. He has been recognized on the Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll.
Successfully represented Bausch & Lomb and Eye Therapies in a Hatch-Waxman patent infringement litigation and parallel PTAB challenges concerning an ANDA for generic versions of over-the-counter Lumify® ocular drops. The cases settled favorably for our clients.
