February 28, 2024

Virtual

Finnegan

This module will explain the lifecycle of a patent application and typical interactions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Practice tips will be provided, and a practical exercise will involve responding to an Office Action. "Prosecuting and Challenging Patent Applications" will be presented by Finnegan attorneys Frank DeCosta, Misook Kim, Gracie Mills, and Soniya Shah. "Careers in IP Law: A World of Possibilities" will be moderated by Finnegan's Chief Legal Talent Officer, Tim Henderson, along with panelists Beth Ferrill, Jeff Jacobstein, Esther Lim and Anand Sharma.

The Finnegan IP University is a four-week (1.5 hours per week) educational program providing an overview of careers in intellectual property (IP) and covering the nuts and bolts of the U.S. patent system. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students with a focus on attracting a strong pool of diverse candidates. Through this program, students will learn about the various types of IP rights, the basics of drafting patent applications, and how to prosecute those applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Students will have an opportunity to meet and network with IP professionals at Finnegan to gain an understanding of what it means to be an IP and patent attorney, and the endless possibilities that a career in IP offers.
