Finnegan secured a victory on behalf of United Bank before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The appeals court ruled that United Bank did not infringe Groove Digital Inc.’s patent covering a method for delivering targeted content, such as ads, by sending alerts or notifications to an end user’s device over a network. According to the district court, Groove Digital could not prove infringement based on the court’s definition of certain patent terms. Groove Digital appealed, but the Federal Circuit upheld the district court’s ruling, affirming its interpretations of various terms in the patent.
