Finnegan partner Doug “Chip” Rettew was named one of Law360’s 2019 IP MVPs. The MVPs are an elite list of attorneys who had the biggest wins and made the most significant contributions to their practice groups in the past year. Doug’s biggest accomplishment this year was securing a victory for Combe, the maker of Vagisil, by convincing a judge to reverse a Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) decision and stop Combe’s rival from registering its “Vagisan” mark.
In an interview with Law360, Doug explains that he was drawn to trademark law because it impacts people on a daily basis and he appreciates how it intersects with various disciplines, such as advertising, branding, and consumer psychology. He said, “I also enjoy trademark, copyright, and false-advertising litigation because they can be very subjective. They are areas where good and creative lawyering often can be the difference that wins a case."
Additionally, he offered advice to junior attorneys—take ownership of your work and don’t be afraid of new challenges. He acknowledged that everyone will make mistakes along the way, but noted, “It's critical to learn from those mistakes and know that they make you a better lawyer in time.” He also emphasized the importance of getting to know your clients’ business and not letting stress get to you. He said, “Even under the duress of litigation it's important to stay focused, keep your sense of humor, and be considerate to everyone on the team and others around you.”
