Managing Intellectual Property
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 28, 2023
WASHINGTON, DC—On April 27th, Managing Intellectual Property held its 18th annual Managing IP Americas Awards, where Finnegan took home trophies for the “ITC Firm of the Year” and “PTAB Firm of the Year” awards. Additionally, partner and practice group leader for the firm’s Trademark, Copyright, and Advertising Group, Danny Awdeh was named “Practitioner of the Year – Trademark Prosecution”. Finnegan partner Doug (Chip) Rettew was named “Litigator of the Year - DC Metro,” highlighting a year in which he represented clients across four trademark trials, a rarity in trademark law.
“It is a testament to our model as a full-service IP practice to be honored and recognized as “Firm of the Year” for both our ITC and PTAB practices,” said Finnegan’s managing partner, Erika Arner. “Seeing the continued success of the firm through our collaborative culture and being recognized across the ITC, PTAB, and Trademark practices tonight is a nod to the hallmarks of Finnegan.”
More than 130 Finnegan attorneys have litigated at the International Trade Commission (ITC). In the past five years, Finnegan attorneys have been involved in more than 11 percent of ITC Section 337 cases. During the past two years, more than half of all ITC cases have involved electrical and IT-related technologies and semiconductors. Finnegan has more than 80 attorneys and over 20 professionals who have at least one degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or some other related form of specialized technology, and many of them have ITC experience. Finnegan also has practitioners with ITC experience in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and mechanical fields. Additionally, our attorneys have tried ITC cases involving design patents and trademarks.
Finnegan is a pioneer when it comes to Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings. Having handled more than 1,200 cases—inter partes review (IPR), post-grant review (PGR), and now-defunct covered business method review (CBM)—before the PTAB, including IPRs involving design patents and 70+ CBMs, Finnegan understands the PTAB’s unique procedures and potential pitfalls and a detailed understanding of both the technology and the law is essential when arguing before the Board. While Finnegan has been recognized as one of the most experienced firms in representing petitioners, a distinguishing feature of the firm’s practice is that we also devote a significant portion of our practice to defending patent owners. Our experience on both sides of the table allows us to be an objective resource for clients facing post-grant challenges.
Finnegan’s trademark, copyright, and advertising practice serves an international clientele with some of the world’s most well-known brands. The group assists clients with high-profile litigations and disputes involving trademark infringement, counterfeiting, unfair competition, dilution, and false advertising, with numbers over the past five years such as filing and defending nearly 400 U.S. trademark oppositions and cancellations, filing and defending more than 100 U.S. trademark civil litigations, and being involved in 500 UDRP arbitrations. Additionally, Finnegan’s trademark practice manages worldwide portfolios and is currently responsible for nearly 25,000 trademark applications and registrations globally.
