On December 28, 2016, the Federal Circuit ruled that Finnegan client Sony did not infringe Northpeak Wireless LLC's patent covering Wi-Fi technology. The Federal Circuit held that the Northern District of California correctly construed the disputed term "register," which is part of Northpeak's patent. Northpeak first sued Sony and numerous other companies in 2008, alleging that the companies' wireless communication products that utilize Wi-Fi technology infringed two of its patents.
