WASHINGTON, DC—In its 11thedition, Chambers Associate ranks Finnegan as a Top 10 firm in all six guide categories: Most Satisfied Associates, Best Firms for Diversity, Retention, Career Opportunities, Benefits and Lifestyle, and Best Firms for Pro Bono. The guide gives students an inside look into the working lives of associates at the nation’s leading law firms. More than 50 full-time researchers conducted thousands of interviews on the condition of anonymity, with associates about topics ranging from the day-to-day work and how hard that work is to social life and diversity; and with firm chairs, managing partners, and hiring partners to understand how they recruit, hire and manage associates.
Chambers notes how associates at Finnegan are able to take on all facets of intellectual property work, highlighting the opportunities available at the firm: “One told us they were ‘able to come onto the case from the beginning and see all the different phases. Starting with basic research tasks, I built up toward a lot of client interaction.’” Another source commented “I like litigation projects because they really let young associates take charge.”
Associates noted that the firm culture is “supportive, and there’s none of the traditional law firm competitiveness.” Chambers also notes Finnegan’s higher-than-average female partnership and associate figures, reflecting the firm’s dedication to inclusion: “…they foster a very inclusive environment that embraces people of various cultures and gender identities.”
Managing partner Mark Sweet points out why he thinks Finnegan is a clear target for law students: “IP law is the definition of a dynamic industry, as both the technology and law surrounding it are constantly changing. What really makes us unique is we are a 'soup to nuts' IP firm: we cover every aspect of IP and we are a go-to firm for that reason. Our broad IP practice makes us unique, and because of our size we have many experienced lawyers in each facet of IP law. Associates can therefore choose areas that interest them the most and grow to become the experts in that particular area of IP.”
Chambers asserts Finnegan is “The 'GP of IP' in DC and far beyond; Finnegan is a jack-of-all-trademarks.”
