Managing Intellectual Property
Managing Intellectual Property interviewed Finnegan partner Brett Heavner to discuss his daily work routine, his 25 years at Finnegan as a trademark litigator, and the complexities as well as favorite parts of his job.
Brett explained how he splits his time between prosecution and litigation work:
“It really depends on my clients’ needs. Most of the time, I do more enforcement work, but sometimes they need more help with clearance.
I enjoy doing both though. You become a better litigator by understanding how trademark prosecution works and being well-versed in the rules at the USPTO.
Knowing how enforcement works helps you come up with better prosecution strategies. They go hand in hand.”
Brett also discussed what has kept him at Finnegan for 25 years:
“I just like it. It has a great group of people who I really enjoy working with and [who] have deep expertise. There’s not any sort of trademark problem that I could encounter that someone else in my group hasn’t already dealt with.”
