The COVID-19 pandemic has caused attorneys and litigants to think in new ways about how they conduct business and consider new strategies for their cases. Law360 contacted Finnegan litigation section leader, Frank A. DeCosta, III, Ph.D., for his perspective on “the new normal.”
Prior to the pandemic, Frank was on a plane every three or four days. However, the decrease in travel has not negatively impacted his work. He said, “Patent lawyers are nomads, essentially. We have a federal practice, we're always traveling district to district, our clients are never local and they're all over the world … pretty quickly, we learned how to replace physical presence with telepresence.” He added, “I've been surprised at how much we can get done. It's not a complete substitute for the face-to-face meetings that we had ... but the technology really has been a reasonable substitute to keep things moving."
