Business Development Manager - Europe (m/f/d)

As Finnegan's Business Development Manager for Europe, you will support business growth across the firm's Munich and London offices while serving as the primary link to Finnegan's U.S.-based Business Development and Marketing leadership and global Client Development, Marketing & Relationship Management (CDMR) organization.

Working directly with office leadership, attorneys, firm management, and Finnegan's U.S.-based Business Development and Marketing leaders, you will support the development and execution of business development initiatives across Europe, strengthen client relationships, identify new market opportunities, and help advance the firm's European business development priorities.

This highly visible role combines strategic and practical business development responsibilities with international collaboration across Europe and the United States.

Key Responsibilities

European Market Growth & Business Development Planning

  • Develop and execute business development plans aligned with the strategic objectives of the Munich and London offices.
  • Partner with office leadership and attorneys to identify priority clients, target markets, and growth opportunities.
  • Drive client development, key account management, and cross-selling initiatives across Europe.
  • Support and coordinate strategic European business development initiatives, including SEP, Automotive, Medical Devices, and other priority growth areas.
  • Monitor developments at the European Patent Office (EPO), the Unified Patent Court (UPC), and the broader IP market, translating intelligence into business development opportunities.
  • Deliver practical business development training and coaching for attorneys.
  • Support the integration and business development strategy of lateral partners and strategic hires.

Market Visibility, Thought Leadership & Engagement

  • Enhance the visibility of Finnegan, its attorneys, and its European offices through targeted business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Lead and support European thought leadership activities, including speaking engagements, publications, webinars, and targeted campaigns.
  • Coordinate submissions for legal directories, rankings, and industry awards, including Chambers, Legal 500, JUVE, and other relevant publications.
  • Oversee the strategic planning and evaluation of conferences, sponsorships, client programs, and networking events.

Market Intelligence, CRM & Reporting

  • Conduct client, competitor, industry, and market research to support strategic business development efforts.
  • Promote effective use of DealCloud and other CRM systems, supporting data quality, opportunity management, reporting, and adoption.
  • Prepare reporting, analysis, and actionable insights for office leadership and firm management.
  • Support the use of AI-enabled tools and technologies that enhance business development effectiveness and client intelligence.

CDMR Operations & Team Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary CDMR contact for the Munich and London offices.
  • Support European pitches, proposals, presentations, and client pursuits, including pricing discussions, credentials management, and pursuit strategy.
  • Lead and coordinate European business development collaboration initiatives and support cross-selling efforts across the firm's international platform.
  • Manage European business development budgets and monitor expenditures against strategic priorities.
  • Support attorney onboarding, profile development, and business integration initiatives.

Working Model

  • The position may be based in Munich or London.
  • Regular in-office presence and collaboration across both offices are required, while maintaining flexibility for remote work.
  • Regular travel between Munich and London and occasional travel to the United States are required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, International Management, Law, or a comparable discipline required; advanced degree (e.g., Master's) preferred.
  • At least 6 years of relevant business development experience within a law firm, professional services, or consulting environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required; professional proficiency in German strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with partners and senior stakeholders in an international environment.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property law, innovation-focused industries, or technology-driven sectors is advantageous.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems and Microsoft Office applications.
