Of Counsel
Varuni Paranavitane, Ph.D., focuses on U.K. litigation and enforcement strategy advice in relation to patents, trade marks, design rights, copyright, and confidential information in a variety of sectors, including pharmaceutical, life science, fashion, marketing and advertising, finance, food, and sports. She also advises clients on contentious trade mark matters at the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom (UK IPO) and has handled actions at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Varuni has advised on enforcement and settlement strategies, including mediation, in relation to disputes at the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and the High Court of Justice in England and Wales.
Varuni has experience in advising clients involved in patent, design rights, trade mark and passing off disputes as well as breach of contract and breach of confidential information (trade secrets) at the High Court.
She has particular experience in handling online intellectual property rights infringements and in advising clients in relation to brand strategy and dealing with counterfeit goods.
With a doctorate in biochemistry, Varuni draws on her scientific expertise and post-doctoral research in offering advice to clients in the life science and biotech sector. In the life sciences sector, she has also coordinated multijurisdictional patent litigation.
Varuni is a member of the U.K. Bioindustry Association's Intellectual Property Advisory Committee (IPAC) and heads an IPAC sub-committee dedicated to access and benefit sharing of genetic resources as dictated by the Nagoya Protocol. She has particular experience with the Nagoya Protocol and advises clients on obligations posed by legislation.
Varuni has been invited to speak at events and seminars on a range of topics in IP law.
Varuni was selected as an outstanding IP Practitioner by the elite World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR) Leaders Directory (2022).
