In law school, Hani was particularly interested in software and privacy issues, directing his studies to include software patents; computer and network privacy and security; and e-commerce. He volunteered for the Chicago Patent Hub, a pro bono program that assisted Illinois inventors. He helped interview inventors, conducted prior art research, and drafted a patent application. Hani competed in the Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court Competition, finishing as a finalist and participated in the national competition at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
While pursuing his bachelor's in mechanical engineering, Hani participated in three student development teams: one developing a device designed to encourage more efficient water consumption, one focusing on the creation of several different sensors intended to improve recognition of areas prone to wildfires, and one conceptualizing a battery powered undergarment capable of reducing the amount of layers necessary for Antarctic researchers. Hani was also a Division III volleyball player.
