Alvin (Keyi) Xu maintains a comprehensive intellectual property (IP) practice spanning patent, trademark, and trade secret litigation; patent portfolio management and prosecution; and licensing and other IP-focused transactional matters. He brings a valuable dual perspective to client counseling, drawing on experience both as outside counsel and in house corporate IP counsel. Alvin advises clients across a wide range of technologies, including semiconductors, consumer products, information systems, medical devices, and computer software.
Alvin's patent litigation practice is particularly strong as it relates to the semiconductor industry, with specialized knowledge in Gallium nitride (GaN) power transistors, semiconductor epitaxy growth, and fabrication technologies. He has deep experience with 337 investigations from the International Trade Commission (ITC), having participated in several major cases and consistently achieving favorable outcomes for firm clients.
Alvin is well-versed in patent prosecution, and is highly skilled in securing U.S. design patents, especially those related to graphical user interfaces for computers and smart devices. He also provides guidance on patent portfolio management and dispute resolution, with particular emphasis on home appliances. Beyond his patent practice, Alvin assists in enforcing trademark and copyright rights, as well as resolving trademark, copyright, and trade secret disputes, notably for Chinese clients.
Prior to joining Finnegan, Alvin served as senior IP counsel for a Fortune 500 company and as an associate attorney at a New York-based law firm, handling patent prosecution, IP licensing and transactions, as well as litigation.
During his undergraduate and graduate studies, Alvin conducted academic research focused on geographic information systems, triangulated irregular networks (TIN), and the finite element method (FEM).
