The speakers will discuss recent decisions from the Federal Circuit addressing patent eligibility under Section 101 and their impact on the semiconductor and IC industry.

  • In Synopsys v. Mentor Graphics, the Federal Circuit affirmed the invalidation of certain method claims for designing ICs, which are directed to conversion of a user's functional description of a logic circuit into an arrangement of hardware components that perform the logic circuit's functions based in large part on admissions that the process could be performed manually.
  • In McRo v. Bandai, the Federal Circuit recognized a difference between merely automating a known manual process and automating an unknown process.
  • The speakers will address the distinctions between the outcomes in these and other cases and how to navigate patent-eligible claims in the semiconductor and IC areas.
