Practice Pointer: Keeping Track of Time

June 29, 2018

Authored and Edited by Elizabeth D. Ferrill

When arguing before the Federal Circuit, three lights on the podium serve as timers.  The green light indicates that the speaker is within their allotted time, the yellow light indicates that the speaker has entered prearranged rebuttal time, and the red light indicates the end of available time.  Though a typical oral argument lasts 15 minutes per side, the court may consolidate related cases for argument or adjust argument time depending on the nature of the case.
