In 1980, President Jimmy Carter named Helen W. Nies to the United States Customs and Patent Appeals Court. President Ronald Reagan reassigned Judge Nies to the Federal Circuit Court when it was established in October of 1982, making her the first woman to sit on the Federal Circuit. She would also go on to become the second Chief Judge in June of 1990 and serve in that post until March 1994.
