Houtan K. Esfahani brings together a unique blend of litigation and trial experience as well as technical expertise that clients demand for high-stakes intellectual property matters. He has nearly 30 years of patent litigation and trial experience before U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Houtan is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has served on the firm’s management committee.

Recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. for his patent practice, Houtan focuses on litigation and client counseling, advising clients on intellectual property matters related to high technology.

Houtan has led high-profile patent litigations and advised clients on intellectual property matters spanning a vast array of complex and emerging technical subject matters involving semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), telecommunications, wireless communications, smartphones, Internet-of-Things (IoT), blockchain coding, and a wide variety of technologies related to consumer and industrial electronics.

Due to his expertise in telecommunications, Houtan often represents clients in the telecommunications industry in litigations and licensing matters related to standard essential patents (SEP). He also participates in the FRAND Licensing Standard Committee of Licensing Executives Society (LES), which is chartered with developing guidelines for licensing standard essential patents on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

Before joining Finnegan, Houtan worked for almost a decade as an electrical and software engineer in the telecommunications industry for the research and development unit of the Bell Telephone System (formerly AT&T Bell Laboratories). As an electrical and software engineer, he designed and implemented complex, large-scale telecommunication systems for deployment throughout the United States.

Drawing on his hands-on experience in the telecommunications industry, Houtan brings together a distinct combination of legal and technical talent that gives clients an upper hand in high-stakes intellectual property matters. Houtan is also at the forefront of intellectual property issues relating to emerging technologies, such as AI, blockchain coding, IoT, and cloud computing.

Houtan regularly teaches courses on patent law tailored to high technology in the electrical and computer fields.
