As a scientist, Rey's research explored drug resistance in various types of blood cancers, exposing him to many proteins and pathways, such as canonical and non-canonical NF-kB; PTEN and p53 modulators; ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation; and many more. Rey presented his research at influential scientific conferences, including the 2017 American Society of Hematology Conference, and was published in Nature Leukemia, Cancer Research, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
While in law school, Rey externed at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit with the Honorable Judge Jimmie V. Reyna. He served as the executive publications editor of the school's flagship law journal, and he published his writings in three different law journals. The articles covered a range of topics, including patents and artificial intelligence; DNA data privacy concerns; and concerns with regulating dangerous biological and chemical agents.
Rey speaks on a variety of topics at universities as well as nonprofit, student, and professional organizations in the United States and Puerto Rico. Areas addressed include intellectual property education for scientists and STEM students; recommendations for scientists interested in a career in intellectual property; discussions about diversity in the scientific and legal fields, and more. He presents in both Spanish and English, which he hopes will help bridge diversity challenges impacting the intellectual property field.
