LaQuan Bates focuses on intellectual property (IP) matters related to data privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), false advertising, trademark, copyright, and technology law. He is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and has a strong foundation in cybersecurity, AI, and machine learning (ML) technologies.
LaQuan has experience conducting trademark searches, filing U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) applications, and developing privacy compliance trackers. He has participated in legal scholar workshops on AI, data privacy, and content moderation.
As a summer associate at Finnegan, LaQuan drafted data collection and privacy policy agreements for clients, ensuring compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). He also provided guidance on the legal implications of web scraping practices, helping clients navigate regulatory risks and align their data collection strategies with evolving privacy standards.
LaQuan served as a data privacy and AI intern with an international lodging and hospitality company. He drafted internal guidelines for responsible AI/ML usage as well as assisted with cybersecurity incident response. He also interned for a renowned file hosting company, where he monitored U.S. privacy law compliance and helped develop standardized software as a service (SaaS) contract templates and service-level agreement (SLA) frameworks. LaQuan broadened his experience working at a nonprofit organization focused on advancing responsible data practices, where he concentrated on issues related to children’s privacy, including compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and emerging frameworks for youth data protection.
