Jennifer Fried, leader of the firm’s advertising practice, is the former assistant director of the advertising industry’s self-regulatory forum, the National Advertising Division (NAD). As a long-time self-regulatory insider, she brings a uniquely informed perspective when challenging and defending advertising claims, counseling on compliance with consumer protection laws, and representing clients before NAD, the National Advertising Review Board (NARB), and federal and state regulatory bodies. At NAD, Jennifer was designated as lead appellate advocate—a role created for her that involved defending NAD decisions under appellate review by NARB.

Jennifer’s extensive experience in advertising law also benefits clients long before they become embroiled in litigation, regulatory, or self-regulatory actions. To ward off unwanted scrutiny from regulators and competitors, Jennifer advises clients on best practices in the development of claim substantiation, including consumer research, in-home use tests, consumer preference surveys, technical product testing, clinical trials, ingredient-specific studies, and other claim support.

Ranked by Chambers in the Advertising: NAD Proceedings category, Jennifer provides advertising guidance across a wide range of sectors, including consumer products, personal care, telecommunications, food and beverages, household appliances, clothing and shoes, over the counter (OTC) drugs, dietary supplements, trade associations, and financial services. Having served as a long-term in-house surrogate in several legal departments, Jennifer appreciates the on-the-ground business demands that underlie clients’ legal, regulatory, and self-regulatory needs.

A frequent presenter at legal and industry workshops and conferences, Jennifer regularly lectures on advertising law. She also co-teaches the first and only Advertising Law course offered at the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law.
