Dr. Björn Kalbfus, a partner in Finnegan’s Munich office, focuses on trademark, design and copyright matters. His practice further encompasses high‑stakes trade secrets and unfair competition disputes, with particular experience in technically complex matters involving advanced technologies and cross‑border enforcement strategies. Björn also advises on non-contentious matters, such as intellectual property (IP) contracts, including license and research and development (R&D) agreements.
Björn has represented clients in IP litigation for more than a decade, acting before numerous German district and appellate courts, including the Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Karlsruhe courts, as well as the Federal Patent Court of Germany. In addition to trademark, design and copyright disputes, he regularly handles matters at the intersection of patent law, unfair competition law, and trade secrets protection. Björn’s litigation experience spans infringement actions, preliminary injunction proceedings, and strategic enforcement and defense in technology‑driven disputes.
Björn has been recognized for his work in patent litigation as well as unfair competition and trade secrets matters under the German Trade Secrets Act. His work frequently involves coordinated, multi‑jurisdictional litigation strategies and regulatory considerations at the European level.
Björn gained valuable industry insight during his legal clerkship with a multinational software corporation, where he was exposed to advanced technology, software, and IP commercialization issues—experience that continues to inform his practical, business‑oriented approach to his practice.
