On September 16, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) partially terminated an inter partes re-examination for numerous claims, requested by Cisco Systems, Inc., against Finnegan client VirnetX. In the ruling, the USPTO said a Texas federal judge’s ruling on the validity of several of the patents’ claims in a related suit precludes continuation of their re-examination. VirnetX’s president and CEO stated, “We are pleased with the USPTO’s decisions to terminate the re-examination proceedings at least partially and look forward to validation of the rest of the claims of these patents."
