According to marketing research company Nielsen, online reviews are the second most trusted source of information about brands. However, fake reviews from both legitimate businesses and counterfeiters have become prevalent, leading to confusion and deception among consumers. Managing Intellectual Property contacted Finnegan partner Brett Heavner for his insight on counterfeit product reviews.
Brett said that authorized distributors often alert companies on fake positive reviews from unauthorized distributors. He also noted that online platforms such as Amazon take fake reviews seriously and encourage consumers to report fake reviews so that they can investigate them further.
