Patrick is a trial and appellate attorney. His litigation experience includes patent, trademark appeal and opposition, copyright, data rights, and trade secret claims; related antitrust and unfair competition issues; general commercial litigation; products liability; and domestic and international arbitration and mediation. Patrick also assists clients with strategic portfolio development and management, due diligence, and transactional and licensing matters.
Patrick has argued more than 100 cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He represents clients before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) as well as the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Patrick served as a law clerk and technical advisor to Circuit Judge Edward S. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit the first two years of the Courts existence. He has been recognized by Intellectual Asset Management as a leading patent litigator in the D.C. area.
Companies he has represented include Raytheon Technologies, United Technologies, Chevron, LG Electronics, InterDigital, Gold Peak, FMC, Energy Conversion Devices and Ovonic Battery Company, Ciena, Mobil Oil Corporation, Trex Company, Danaher, Jacobs Vehicle Systems, Allegheny Teledyne, and Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, among many other publically traded as well as private companies.
Patrick received a degree in civil engineering and studied nuclear engineering. Before attending law school, he worked as an engineer and has experience with structures, dynamics, fluids, and mechanics. He worked on a variety of energy technologies, including large and small-scale solar thermal and photovoltaic as well as biomass, and he has engineering experience in construction, pipelines, fluids, and remote sensing. Patrick's technical background serves him well when handling legal matters for clients, including oil field goods, exploration and production, satellite gravimetry, nuclear well-logging, pipelines, refining, catalysis, and a wide variety of downstream petrochemical products. Patrick also uses his engineering insight representing clients in connection with telecommunications; semiconductors; electronic devices; software; energy storage systems, including various electrochemical battery technologies; diesel engines; axial gas turbine compressors; and computational fluid dynamics.
