WASHINGTON, DC - Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the world, announced today the election of ten lawyers to the partnership, effective January 1, 2013. The diverse backgrounds and technical knowledge of the new partners range from consumer products to medical devices, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals to electrical, computer, and mechanical-related technologies. Their practices cover all aspects of IP law, including counseling, prosecution, and litigation before federal district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Stephanie H. Bald (Washington, DC) focuses on trademark, false advertising, domain name, unfair competition, and copyright litigation and disputes. Ms. Bald appears before federal courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She has litigated a broad range of issues, relating to trademarks, trade dress, domain names, false advertising, copyrights, certification marks, gray-market goods, and counterfeit products. She received her B.A. (2001) from Denison University; M.A. (2004) from American University; and J.D. (2004), cum laude, from American University, Washington College of Law.
Christopher T. Blackford (Washington, DC) practices all aspects of patent law, with a particular emphasis on patent litigation before U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission. He has considerable experience handling matters relating to electrical and computer technologies, including smartphones, software, power management, telecommunications, semiconductors, circuit design, computer architecture, calling cards, bar codes, and various consumer appliances. Mr. Blackford received his B.S. (1999) and M.S. (2001) from University of Texas at Dallas; and J.D. (2004), cum laude, from Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law.
Kenie Ho (Washington, DC) works in the areas of patent litigation and IP management and transactions. He has litigated dozens of patent cases in U.S. district courts and at the U.S. International Trade Commission, working in all aspects of litigation, from pre-filing diligence to post-trial activities. He has handled hundreds of domestic and foreign patent applications at all stages of prosecution, from application drafting to patent issuance, as well as post-issuance matters such as reexamination and certificates of correction. Mr. Ho received his B.E. (1997) from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; M.S. (2000) from Syracuse University; and J.D. (2006) from Georgetown University Law Center.
Jennifer A. Johnson, Ph.D. (Washington, DC) practices patent litigation and appeals in a wide range of biotechnology-related fields, including plant molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, and immunology. Dr. Johnson’s experience includes arguing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; handling all aspects of trial preparation including patent litigation strategy development; working with expert witnesses; and conducting and defending key witness depositions. She received her B.S. (1996) and Ph.D. (2001) from University of California, Berkeley; and J.D. (2004), with high honors, from University of Washington School of Law.
Stephen E. Kabakoff (Atlanta, GA) practices all areas of patent law, including patent litigation before U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission, patent prosecution, and client counseling. His work is primarily focused on technology relating to electrical and computer engineering. Mr. Kabakoff received his B.S. (1995) from Cornell University; M.S. (1997) from Carnegie Mellon University; and J.D. (2005), cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
Gary C. Ma (Palo Alto, CA and Taipei, Taiwan) serves as the managing attorney of Finnegan’s Taipei office. Mr. Ma’s practice focuses on patent litigation, patent prosecution, and client counseling. His litigation experience includes handling complex patent litigations in federal district courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission involving a variety of technologies, including polymers, light emitting diodes, optical sensors, liquid crystal displays, projectors, IC design, and optical storage devices, as well as technologies in the chemical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and mechanical arts. Mr. Ma received his B.S. (1998) from University of California, Los Angeles; and J.D. (2002) from George Washington University Law School.
Jill K. MacAlpine, Ph.D. (Washington, DC) practices all areas of patent law including patent litigation, patent procurement, due diligence investigations, opinion work, and client counseling, primarily in the chemical and pharmaceutical areas. Dr. MacAlpine received her B.S. (1993) from Queen’s University; Ph.D. (1999) from University of British Columbia; and J.D. (2003), with highest honors, from George Washington University Law School.
Denise Main, Ph.D. (Washington, DC) focuses on U.S. district court and appellate litigation primarily in the chemical and pharmaceutical arts, particularly Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) cases arising under the Hatch-Waxman Act. Dr. Main received her B.S. (1993) from University of Central Florida; Ph.D. (2000) from University of Florida; and J.D. (2005) from American University, Washington College of Law.
William B. Raich, Ph.D. (Washington, DC) focuses his practice on U.S. district court patent litigation and pre-litigation client counseling in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics. Dr. Raich has extensive experience in all phases of cases arising from the filing of Abbreviated New Drug Applications. Dr. Raich received his B.A. (1993) from Swarthmore College; Ph.D. (1999) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; and J.D. (2007), cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center.
P. Andrew Riley (Washington, DC) focuses his practice on patent litigation before U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission involving a wide array of technologies, including medical devices, mobile phones, software, wind-turbine generators, motor and hybrid vehicles, Internet applications, semiconductors, image sensors, manufacturing machines, and pharmaceuticals. His practice also includes patent counseling, licensing, opinions, and reexamination proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Riley received his B.S. (1995) from Boston University; M.B.A. (2003) from the College of William and Mary; and J.D. (2003) from the College of William and Mary School of Law.
