Finnegan Summer Theater Production

Finnegan Summer Theatre Production

You are the Jury is a mock trial set in a United States courtroom and is designed to teach high tech executives and IP professionals about patent trials in the United States. The cast includes four professional Israeli actors and three trial attorneys from Finnegan, the largest intellectual property law firm in the world. While Finnegan has more than 400 Iawyers and IP professionals, the three lawyers in this production alone have collectively spent more than 70 years litigating patent infringement lawsuits and other contentious matters in United States courts.

In an entertaining and humorous manner, the play condenses key lessons of patent trials into a 90-minute format. As with most patent infringement suits in the United States, a jury decides the outcome. In You are the Jury, the audience assumes the role of the jury and decides the outcome of the case.

This production runs for two nights only: 3 and 4 July at Beit Hayal Ha’avir in Herzliyya. Space is limited. If you are interested, it is highly recommended that you purchase tickets early. Ticket price is 100 NIS, and all proceeds benefit Ezer Mizion, a widely known non-profit organization helping the needy in Israel.

Each show is preceded by a dinner buffet and is followed by a dessert reception with the actors. The theatrical presentation is produced and directed by Israel’s own Avital Yaron.

What Makes the Patents of Some Medical Device Companies So Much More Valuable Than Others?
Speaker: Gerson S. Panitch

Today, great technology alone is not enough to propel a medical device company to success. Seasoned investors examine patents under a microscope to determine the exclusivity that they provide. Most medical companies file for patents, but why is it that the patents of some attract more attention than others? In this presentation, we will contrast two medical devices companies—one whose strategically developed patents propelled it to an acquisition of hundreds of millions of dollars and the other, who despite a similar investment in patents, had nothing of value to show for it. We will distill a series of lessons that every growing medical device company can use to increase valuation.

How Collaboration Agreements Can Adversely Impact Your Ability to Obtain U.S. Patents
Speaker: Dr. Steven P. O’Connor, Ph.D.

Companies frequently enter into collaborations with other companies or university investigators as part of their research and development efforts. Yet few companies are aware that their collaborations, and how they are structured, can have an impact on whether they can successfully obtain patent rights for inventions developed as part of the collaboration. Your company may lose valuable U.S. rights if the terms of your collaboration agreements deny you the flexibility needed to address potential problems that could arise in attempting to obtain a patent. This presentation discusses recent developments that create potential traps for unwary parties to collaboration agreements. Solutions addressing the interplay of the current state of the law pertaining to coinventorship, ownership of patent rights, and double-patenting will be provided as case studies. This information will enlighten you about the hidden traps waiting to ensnare your IP rights so that your company may avoid becoming caught by them.

Preventing Competitors From Copying Your Critical Control Algorithms,
Mobile Apps, and Software

Speakers: Gerson S. Panitch and Darren M. Jiron

Software is everywhere. Regardless of whether your company develops electronics, medical devices, industrial processing equipment, wireless technology, or traditional software, software is likely at the heart of what separates your company from competitors. It is the engine behind the multibillion dollar mobile app space. It resides within the controls of nearly every device that uses power, and it enables the rapidly expanding field of cloud-based computing and data management. As a result, protecting software innovations is of significant importance to most companies, regardless of technical discipline. In this seminar, geared to corporate executives, we will explore unique ways of protecting software-based inventions, and provide CEO’s, CTO’s, and IP managers with new ideas for building company value.
