Xirui Zhang, Ph.D.

Xirui has worked on more than 20 inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, representing both petitioners and patent owners. Her experience includes searching prior art, developing validity strategies, draft briefing, preparing and deposing expert and fact witnesses, and presenting oral arguments before the PTAB.

Xirui conducts patent due diligence, clearance, landscape, freedom-to-operate (FTO), and design-around assessments, and she provides legal opinions on infringement, validity, and patentability. She also counsels clients on all stages of preparing and prosecuting U.S. utility and design patent applications, including evaluating invention disclosures; preparing new and continuing patent applications; responding to office actions; conducting examiner interviews; preparing and filing appeals to the PTAB; and managing worldwide patent portfolios.

Xirui’s technical experience comprises a wide range of technologies, including medical and analytical devices, optical microscopy and spectroscopy, optical biosensing, optoelectronics, optical coherence tomography, endoscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound imaging, image and video processing, nanotechnology, in vitro molecular diagnostics, consumer electronics, mobile devices, digital cameras, electronic authentication, light-emitting diode (LED) systems, robotics, neurostimulation and neuromodulation, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), computer processors, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), power tools, and artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine.

Before joining Finnegan, Xirui completed her doctoral research in the Optical Characterization and Nanophotonics (OCN) laboratory at the Photonics Center of Boston University, where she developed high-throughput optical biosensing instruments for molecular research and point-of-care diagnosis. Her interdisciplinary research experience and collaboration with scientists and engineers strengthened her ability to work with inventors and experts on complex technical issues in patent matters.
