Matthew (Matt) Johnson practices across a diverse array of patent law, including district court and appellate litigation, patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings, and portfolio development and management. He has expertise in technical fields ranging from computer science and electronics to software, financial services, automotive, and medical devices.

Matt has experience in many different stages of litigation, including strategy development, infringement and validity analysis, drafting motions and written discovery, document production management, and appeals.

Matt is experienced with all aspects of patent prosecution, helping inventors and companies manage and refine their patent portfolios, expanding their legal protections, and aiding in developing their patent strategy. His patent prosecution practice includes working with photoelectric technologies, computer software, information systems, and microelectronics. His insight helps clients with correctly positioning their technology in their relevant field to navigate complex issues, such as patent validity in otherwise crowded markets of competing technology.

Prior to joining Finnegan, Matt served honorably as a nuclear surface warfare officer in the United States Navy, where he was a subject matter expert in nuclear reactors afloat and oversaw the complex maintenance and operation of two operating reactors onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). He managed a large team of sailors in maintaining the ship's complex high voltage electrical system and became intimately familiar with electrical componentry of microvoltage electronic systems and high voltage electrical grids. He was also a critical member involved in the complex process of depressurizing and cooling down those nuclear reactors in preparation for nuclear refueling.

Matt regularly handles pro bono work as he seeks to serve fellow military veterans in navigating the disability process and representing them before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veteran Claims.
