Marcelo Barros focuses on patent litigation in federal courts and post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). With a background in biomedical engineering, he brings technical versatility in working with companies in the life sciences as well as electrical and computer technology sectors.
Marcelo's experience includes conducting IP portfolio landscape analyses for pre-litigation due diligence matters, drafting motions, and creating claim charts relevant to inter partes review (IPR) petitions. He also has experience researching privacy law issues.
While in law school, Marcelo participated in a clinical program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), where he drafted memos and analyzed administrative law and procedural issues facing complex environmental law litigation. During his graduate studies, he conducted research at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. He developed a FRET-based biosensor for the purposes of creating an assay to investigate heart failure. Marcelo gained exposure to a great array of wet lab and molecular biology methods.
Prior to his career in law, Marcelo worked for a leading genomic sequencing company as a system integration engineer, helping to design, analyze, and validate improvements to the most current gene sequencing platform. He worked with a diverse group of professionals in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), which encompasses chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, optics, hardware, and electrical components for imaging.
Marcelo participates in the firm's Veteran's Assistance Program, providing pro bono representation to disabled military veterans. His work includes a case before the Board for Correction of Naval Records (BCNR).
